The goal of this book is to teach you how to write a 20th-century-style composition for a solo instrument, for the AmusTCL exam. 20th-century-style is defined as “not belonging to the traditional major/minor key systems normally used in Western classical music”.
This book is aimed at candidates taking exams such as the Trinity AmusTCL but may also be of interest to anyone with an interest in composing in a modern style.
The AmusTCL exam composition option requires you to compose a short melody (24-30 bars) in a modern style, based on a given opening. Styles include Whole-Tone, Pentatonic, Serial, and Modal.
